my father took off my training wheels.
Since then, I've always enjoyed riding bicycles. Now that I'm retired, I've been building tricycles ('trikes') as a hobby. Here you'll see some construction pictures of my projects.(Special thanks to the gang at 'AtomicZombie.com' for their inspiration).

Construction of the 2007 Recumbent Trike

The build began in January, 2007, with the purchase of some square steel tubing for the frame and parts from bikes found along the side of the road.

Making the wheels

A trike requires wider rear hubs than a 'normal' bike, so I widened mine to 3 1/2 inches using a piece of old pipe and some hubs from a rusty old bike found in the trash.

Test fit for the drive train

The mounts for the disk brake and freewheel are fabricated and the drive train is assembled for a test fit.

The frame is assembled

The frame pieces are welded and it's beginning to take shape.

This experimental mechanism allows the handle bars to be adjusted to the rider's comfort.

Everything is assembled for a test fitting.
Painting is next.

It's time for paint

The Trike is completely disassembled and prepped for paint.
First, some white primer...followed by some bright yellow...
then topped off with a 'clear coat'.

Ready to ride...!!

Alloy pedals, chrome drink holder, and shiny pike nuts for the front axle bring out the sparkle...

There are 2 wheelsets for various types of riding. The 26-inch "Speed" wheels provide a smooth, high speed ride on well-paved roads and bike paths. The 24-inch "All Terrain" wheels are for mixed-terrain trails which may be unpaved, gravel, or natural paths.

Of all the bikes I've built, this project was the most challenging, fun and educational.
